Economic Context
The Empire benefits from a moderate but decisive technological advantage. Interstellar travel is primarily conducted via:
- Cosmic Gates, stable but rare,
- or the Warp drive, a spatial distortion technology that shortens distances.
The Warp drive is dangerous: a calculation error can send a ship into a star or disintegrate it. Trips are therefore limited to already-charted zones, making exploration slow and perilous.
Humanity currently controls two ecumenopoleis: Prime (political capital housing the Council and the Assembly) and Nexus (secondary administrative center). Entirely urbanized with approximately 1.9 trillion inhabitants each, they depend massively on imports from agricultural planets for their food supply and stand as symbols of imperial power. Resources remain scarce, however, and their extraction remains risky.
Economic System
The Empire operates according to a mixed economic model combining free enterprise and strategic intervention:
Freedom of Enterprise
- Private property: Citizens can create and own businesses
- Free market: Open competition and innovation encouraged
- Mega-corporations: Some companies reach considerable size and influence
Imperial Intervention
When a company reaches a critical size and proves its strategic importance to society, the Council intervenes to buy out the company from its founder. This acquisition is made with generous compensation, transforming successful entrepreneurs into extremely wealthy individuals.
Companies thus acquired become imperial industries, managed directly by the Council to ensure stability in critical sectors: defense, Arcanotechnology, infrastructure, terraforming.
This system:
- Encourages private innovation (massive financial reward)
- Ensures control of strategic sectors
- Maintains a dynamic economy while avoiding uncontrolled private monopolies
Post-Scarcity Society
Thanks to arcanotechnological industrialization, the Empire has reached a state of post-scarcity where vital needs are met without the necessity of mandatory work. Essential resources (food, housing, healthcare) are guaranteed to all citizens.
Work becomes optional: Most people choose to work to access luxury goods, for social status, or simply to keep busy. This optional nature of work makes it less alienating and exhausting than it has been historically.
Inverted Work Valuation
Imperial society presents a work respect hierarchy that is inverted compared to pre-post-scarcity civilizations:
- Physically and mentally demanding work: Highly compensated and respected (dangerous construction, exploration, complex research)
- High-level management (civilian or military): Respected due to the difficulty of reaching these positions and excelling in them
- Intermediate military management: Valued as necessary for the defense of the Empire
- Intermediate civilian management: Very poorly compensated and considered useless work in a society where work is not necessary
- Simple and repetitive tasks: Low social value, often automated
This inversion reflects the reality of a society where working is a choice rather than an obligation. People respect those who choose difficult challenges, and look down upon positions that seem to exist only through organizational inertia.
Standard of Living and Life Expectancy
Arcanotechnological medical advances have raised average life expectancy to 150-200 years. Combined with the post-scarcity economy, this longevity allows citizens to pursue multiple careers, passions, and projects throughout their lives.
The bulk of the population can afford to spend more time in leisure and recreation, creating a culture where arts, sports, and entertainment occupy a central place.
Drugs and Substances
All drugs are legal in the Empire. This policy reflects both social liberalism and, unintentionally, an effective social control strategy (satisfied population = less rebellion).
- Social stigmatization: Virtually nonexistent. Excesses are rare and viewed with compassion rather than condemnation.
- Military control: Strict for active-duty soldiers. Certain substances are prohibited, while others that enhance performance are authorized under medical supervision.
- Social impact: The population is generally happier and less inclined toward radical dissent.
