Status Effects

Overview

Status effects are conditions applied to characters during combat or exploration. Each effect has a defined mechanical impact, a canonical saving throw to resist it, and specific removal conditions.

Saving throw: When a status specifies a save, the target rolls 1d20 + stat modifier against the caster’s attack roll or a fixed DC set by the spell. A successful save negates or reduces the effect.

Conditions

Conditions are binary states — a character either has the condition or does not.

Blinded

Effect: Cannot attack or defend; auto-fail perception checks.

Save: PER

Removed by: Duration expiry, healing effects.

Paralyzed

Effect: Cannot act. Melee attacks against the target automatically hit.

Save: CON

Removed by: Duration expiry (1-2 turns).

Incapacitated

Effect: Cannot act. Broken immediately upon taking damage.

Save: INT

Removed by: Taking damage or duration expiry.

Immobilized

Effect: Cannot move. Can still perform actions that don’t require movement.

Save: STR

Removed by: STR check or duration expiry.

Knocked Down

Effect: Prone. Must spend an action to stand up. Melee attacks gain +2 against the target; ranged attacks suffer -2.

Save: CON

Removed by: Standing up (costs one action).

Mind Controlled

Effect: The target is controlled by the caster and acts on the caster’s orders.

Save: INT

Removed by: Taking damage (Level 1 only) or duration expiry.

Hallucinating

Effect: The target perceives false stimuli. Must attack the nearest creature (ally or enemy).

Save: INT

Removed by: Duration expiry.

Grappled

Effect: Movement blocked. Can still act but cannot leave the area.

Save: STR

Removed by: STR check against the effect’s DC.

Restrained

Effect: As Grappled, plus -2 to all attack rolls and attackers gain +2 against the target.

Save: STR (higher DC than Grappled)

Removed by: STR check against the effect’s DC.

Equipment Disabled

Effect: Exoskeleton bonuses and electronic device functions are nullified.

Save: None (affects equipment, not the person)

Removed by: Duration expiry.

Suppressed

Effect: -4 to all actions. The target is pinned down by sustained fire or area pressure.

Save: None (positional — leave the area to end)

Removed by: Leaving the suppression area or duration expiry.

Camouflaged

Effect: Hidden from detection. Opponents must succeed an opposed PER check to detect the target.

Save: None (opposed PER check to detect)

Removed by: Attacking, taking damage, or duration expiry.

Scaling Effects

Scaling effects have variable intensity depending on the spell level or stacking.

Frostbite

Effect: -1 speed and -1 hit score per stack. At 5 stacks, triggers an explosion dealing 2d20+8 damage and removes 5 stacks.

Save: CON

Duration: 2 turns per stack.

Stacks: Yes (up to 5 before detonation).

Burning

Effect: Takes fire damage at the start of each turn. Damage varies by spell level (1d4 to 4d6 per turn).

Save: DEX

Duration: 2-4 turns depending on spell level.

Stacks: No (higher level replaces lower).

Weakened

Effect: -X to all rolls (X varies by spell level, typically -1 to -4).

Save: CON

Duration: 2-3 turns.

Slowed
