Tactical and Strategic Implications

These limitations explain the current doctrine of deployment:

Preferred Uses of Crystal Systems

  • Spaceships: Weight is not a problem, conversions are predictable (propulsion, shields), crystals can be confined in armored zones
  • Heavy ground artillery: Fixed installations where mass is acceptable, limited and controlled usage
  • Defense installations: Planetary shields, stationary anti-aircraft systems
  • Civilian infrastructure: Energy plants, large-scale climate regulation

Preference for Human Arcanotechnicians

  • Ground combat: Mobility, versatility, no risk of explosion
  • Special operations: Rapid adaptation, multiple capabilities, stealth
  • Complex situations: Human judgment, improvisation, tactical creativity
  • Extended missions: Humans “recharge” naturally without mortal risk

A military adage sums up the situation well: “A crystal can give you more power. An arcanotechnician gives you more options. In combat, options win.”

Systemic Vulnerabilities

Beyond physical limitations:

  • Complexity: A failure can paralyze entire sectors of the economy
  • Vulnerability to countermeasures: Jammers can disrupt conversions
  • Initial cost: Installing arcanotechnic infrastructure is extremely expensive
  • Dependence on ambient Flux: Regions with low Flux density are problematic

This complex dependence means that a major disruption in Flux supply or sabotage of arcanotechnic infrastructure could have catastrophic consequences for the Empire.
